The One Mistake Bethesda Made In Fallout 3 That No One Noticed
Every version of Fallout 3 has various graphic bugs, lock ups, save game issues, and gameplay bugs . Including my peaceful resolution to Tennypenny Towers registering as a feral ghoul invasion on Galaxy News Radio. However, Bethesda made one mistake about something that is widely known here in America.
Fallout 3 isn’t a play by play of American history. Before the bombs dropped the U.S.A. was referred to, in many points in the game, as the U.S.S.A. One thing that is surprisingly on the money is the D.C. Mall. This is where all the Smithsonian museums, Library of Congress, National Archive, Capital Building, Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial are located. Bethesda took great care in replicating these places and their locations. Sure the Vietnam memorial (and other places such as the Art Museum and Native American History Museum) isn’t included, but in the Fallout universe the Vietnam war never happened. In the one place where Bethesda could have taken liberties with new/different architecture and statuary, it didn’t. The Mall would have been the perfect place to show off the history of this alternate U.S. Instead Bethesda decided to replicate the Malls most distinguished landmarks down to the most minute detail…..almost.

In the Lincoln Memorial on the North Wall is Lincoln’s second inaugural address which talks about the unity of the North and the South. The speech is carved in three giant marble slabs. On the first slab there is a misspelling of the word “Future”. Instead the artist accidentally carved the word “Euture”, talk about epic fail. Included is a picture taken by staff on vacation to D.C. You can also read about it on the wiki. In Fallout 3 no such mistake is there. With all the effort to make the Lincoln Memorial as true to life as possible, how could Bethesda miss this well known error? Sure the excuse could be that the mistake was not made in the Fallout world. But what a cop out, for this more than any other reason we give Fallout a -10/100……..just kidding this game rocks.

Why cant some people get it into their heads that its just a game and not a history lesson.
stipid emericans
So why don’t they just fill in the bottom part of the ‘E’ to make it look like an ‘F’?
Ye. Gods.
What an atrocious waste of a life.
p.s. you owe me a couple of minutes of mine back!
The game is an alternate reality where the cold war never ended. Last I checked the Vietnam war was a cold war conflict, so it would have defiantly occurred in the Fallout universe.
Nice try.
Wow, really? You guys are getting worked up over this? Did no one else but me noticed that this was just one of these “hey, look at this neat glitch I noticed. This game is the awesomest” and you guys come on here and rip him a new one? You guys are a bunch of douches!
Good find HornyMelon
Steve, Vietnam was NOT a cold war.
Nice try.
I never said Vietnam was a cold war Saint, I said it was a cold war conflict. To put it bluntly, it was a war that occurred due to friction between countries during the cold war. But don’t take my word for it, here a link that might help you understand better.
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_did_the_cold_war_relate_to_the_vietnam_war
I agree with SaintMantooth, you guys are ridiculous. So Horny Melon as a keen eye for details, and knows a bit about history so you call him a fuckwad. Get over yourself. Hey Melon, next time put a picture of Samus touching herself at the end of your post and these sophomoric tools will love you.
You might want to revist tenpenny tower… I thought I’d peacefully resolved the situation as well… turned out the bigots were right.
Nice catch, but perhaps you ought to consider that there could be deeper and more minute implications of the alternate history. F for an E, but Fallout 3 happens. You know, since the creator didn’t spell the word wrong, he had just enough time to finish up to catch a train, where he met his wife who had a kid who saved the life of the ruler in vietnam, which prevented the war, but left thousands alive; one of which was the father of the man who brought out the conditions that made Fallout 3 possible.
I’m just sayin’.
It’s not what the article is about. It’s the False misleading Headline. “The one mistake Bethesda made in Fallout, that no one noticed”.
It’s like saying I’m giving out free plasma screens in my garage at noon. When you get there you find out the screens are an inch big.
@ The Dim bulbs at the top of the comments:
I’m going to have to delete you for language. Learn to express yourself better.
@ Everyone else
The article was clearly tongue in cheek I’m glad some people got it.
@Spanishbrownie:
Your right I revisited today and the place was over run by ghouls…….so I wiped them out.
Think you guys should stop nagging on this.. It’s a fun fact and it’s rather funny that it was missed, which was clearly the intentions of this “article”.
As to the cold war Nam, and Fallout. Even though the Vietnam war can be considered a turning point in the cold war it will never be a part of the cold war. The cold war specifically goes into the arming race between the US and Soviet after WW2 where it was all about who could make the most Atom Bombs the fastest. In the end both sides ended up with too much and it made it impossible to openly attack, because if either side would have attacked the whole world would end. This is what Fallout specifically takes into perspective, the world ending due to the aspect behind the cold war. It is called the Cold War because everything that was done was secret and there were never opened a shot from either side. It was basicly a pissing contest that happend because both sides were too afraid to pull the first punch.
However none of that matters as in the Fallout universe the world ends during the 50s…. which means the Vietnam war never had a chance to happen, which is why it would never make sense to have it in the game at all anyways.
war happened in 2077 in the fallout universe, cold war never ended, but the russians didn’t screw us, China did. DUuuuUuUUuuuh
i found you by link from the Directory Listing Script from Ash.. Nice to read your blog ^.^

I just have to say, this might have been intended it might not, as many people have said before me, it is alternate reality so there could have been pretty much any explaination for the F being an E, maybe pixelsword was right. Maybe when the bombs fell a bit of concrete left a dent in the exact position of the F and created an E looking shape. I dont know. But yeah, I wouldn’t go around calling it a mistake as Bethesda may have made it like that to mess around with our minds. =] Well done for pointing it out though.
i think RabbitFly just rapped all of your minds
who gives a dam its a game its not real what the hell (u ow me a few min of my life 2)(20$ will do)
Vietnam WAS explicitly a cold war conflict. The cold war was inherently an ideological conflict between capitalism and communism and the superpowers that upheld those beliefs. Vietnam was a conflict by proxy between those superpowers (the US and Russia/China both sponsoring and assisting the south and the north respectively). This is a very simple fact.
That does not, however, mean that said conflict is inevitable in this universe. The point of divergence in this universe is WW2 (or even earlier, if you take into account that science itself explicitly operates on different principles in this universe). There’s so many things that might have changed that could potentially have made vietnam not happen, or even for the war to have happened but with relatively minor casualties.
There’s simply so much we don’t know there. Hell, maybe the war did happen exactly as it did for us but in this 50’s thinking world a lost conflict was simply not acknowledged by the government. Or maybe an atom bomb vapourised it. We just don’t know.
