Blu-ray win a surprise? Not even close.
There has been a plethora of articles coming from both the blogosphere and established media that Blu-ray came out of left field and despite all odds it won the format war. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. It’s dominance was for told.

Article after article has been produced about how the PS3 was Blu-ray’s “Trojan horse“. How a Blu-ray win was a total surprise, and other such nonsense. Where does this come from? All you had to do was google up some history to find out. When the PS2 hit the market it was the cheapest DVD player you could buy. Sure it didn’t have all the whiz bang features that a stand alone DVD players had, but if price was your concern it was the best deal in town. Sony sure noticed this “minor” statistic. With DVD not being able to support HD content and no clear standard to use, including Blu-ray was the best move Sony could have made in pushing it’s own format. Sony knew from DVD starting out that new player sales trickled in the thousands. Sony realised that even if the PS3 was a total failure, the most unlikely of scenarios, it would eclipse any other formats sales literally over night. So why did the major online sites and the blogosphere chose to ignore this minor fact? You can attribute this to two things. Good old fashioned fanboyism and Microsoft’s billion dollar guerrilla marketing campaign. There wasn’t an article to be found during the run up to the PS3 launch about how Blu-ray inclusion was either a good thing for gamers or a good move on Sony’s part. The Ps3 was being bad mouthed left and right for in numeral reasons. Chief among them was the inclusion of Blu-ray. This continued for another year after launch. Now that HD-DVD is dead and PS3 sales are increasing dramatically everyone’s gone into damage control mode to save their credibility. Some of us though, knew from the very beginning.

haha ..so true…
